Who is this Epilepsy Training for?

Course description

This course provides learners with the knowledge and practical skills required to support a person with epilepsy safely and confidently. It covers common seizure types, seizure triggers, first-aid procedures, emergency escalation, individual epilepsy care plans, dignity, workplace safety and incident reporting.

Where relevant to the learner’s role, the course also covers prescribed rescue medication, including pre-administration checks, simulated administration, monitoring, emergency procedures and documentation. Practical exercises and scenarios allow learners to demonstrate their ability to respond appropriately while working within their training, workplace procedures and level of authorisation.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, learners will be able to:

  • Explain what epilepsy is and how seizures can affect a person.
  • Recognise common seizure types, including tonic-clonic, focal, absence, myoclonic, tonic and atonic seizures.
  • Describe possible seizure triggers and warning signs.
  • Provide safe and appropriate first aid during and after a seizure.
  • Identify actions that could cause harm, including restraint or placing objects in the person’s mouth.
  • Monitor the person’s airway, breathing, responsiveness and recovery.
  • Recognise when a seizure requires emergency medical assistance.
  • Explain the purpose and importance of an individual epilepsy care plan.
  • Follow workplace procedures for supporting a person with epilepsy.
  • Protect the person’s dignity, privacy and confidentiality.
  • Record and report seizure activity accurately.
  • Explain the purpose of prescribed emergency rescue medication.
  • Complete the required medication checks before administration.
  • Demonstrate the simulated administration of prescribed rescue medication in accordance with an individual care plan.
  • Monitor the person following rescue medication and respond appropriately to breathing difficulties or treatment failure.
  • Provide an accurate handover to emergency services or other healthcare professionals.

Buccal Midazolam Training

The administration of Buccal Midazolam (theory and practice) is included as standard on all of our Epilepsy Training courses.

Buccal Midazolam training can be booked seperately for groups who have previously attended Epilepsy Training.

It is specifically targeted at those working with individuals who are prescribed Buccal Midazolam as rescue medication. This Buccal Midazolam Training has been designed to ensure that learners are provided with current relevant theoretical knowledge and practical skills.
