This course provides health and social care workers with the knowledge needed to prevent fires and respond safely to a fire alarm or emergency. It covers fire hazards, workplace responsibilities, fire-risk assessment, alarms, fire doors, escape routes, PEEPs, progressive horizontal evacuation, medical oxygen, firefighting equipment and healthcare-specific evacuation arrangements. Fire Safety Training
Prerequisites for enrolment
No previous fire-safety qualification is required.
Learners should:
- Have sufficient language and literacy skills to understand emergency instructions
- Be familiar with, or receive access to, their workplace fire procedure
- Inform the trainer of any support or evacuation needs
- Be physically able to participate in the planned practical activities, where applicable
Reasonable adjustments may be provided without compromising fire-safety standards.

- Explain their workplace fire-safety responsibilities
- Identify common ignition and fuel sources
- Explain how heat, fuel and oxygen support combustion
- Recognise people who may require additional assistance
- Describe the purpose of a fire-risk assessment

- Keep escape routes and final exits available
- Raise the alarm and call the fire and rescue service
- Follow the workplace evacuation strategy
- Explain the purpose of a PEEP
- Describe progressive horizontal evacuation

- Explain why smoke presents a serious risk
- Recognise the additional hazards associated with medical oxygen
- Explain when portable firefighting equipment may be considered
- Identify common extinguisher types and their limitations
- Complete routine workplace fire-safety checks
- Report and escalate fire-safety defects appropriately
